Ten good
reasons to join BTOG

1 BTOG membership acts as an
employment insurance policy for advice and representation. Our
full-time officers and elected representatives are trained and practised in
solving problems through negotiation and dialogue. If necessary, members
also have access to professional legal representation. We aim to achieve
results through the strength of our arguments. Everyone has a legal right
to join a union of their choice and employers welcome our presence. You
wouldn't drive a car without insurance, so why gamble with your career?
2 BTOG members are invited to
become involved in any of our activities, should they wish to do so. We are
a membership-driven organisation and we welcome your input. We have a
democratic approach to decision-making and we encourage our members to
tell us their concerns, so that we can take up the issues that are
important to you.
3 We give you a voice on the job by
providing you with a local and national forum to raise professional
issues. We promote excellence in the industry. We seek to maintain
standards and preserve the best traditions of your profession in
partnership with employers. BTOG believes that a working environment of
openness, honesty and integrity contributes to the success of the industry.
4 We can ensure that your voice
is added to that of your colleagues to put the case for the protection
and enhancement of your pay and conditions. We can also represent members
threatened by restructuring. We are respected by employers as a fair
advocate for our members.
5 Membership provides access to
information booklets, web-based resources and other communication
tools. Members also have access to representatives who can answer any
queries, and have access to the expertise of the Amicus Research
Department. All members receive the quarterly Amicus FPA magazine First
Edition.
6 BTOG has access to personal
insurance benefits, free wills, consumer discounts and credit card deals
that can't be found elsewhere. Members are able to access the Amicus
AEEU stakeholder pension. There is also access to discounted gas and
electricity suppliers, a health care cash plan, discounts on airport
parking, and Well Woman insurance. We run a 24-hour legal helpline for
members who need advice on non-employment matters, which is also available
to members' families.
7 We believe that employers and
unions should work together to challenge discrimination in all its
forms in the workplace. We argue for equality in access to pay, conditions,
promotion and training and against racism and prejudices of sexuality. We
have a record of taking on unfairnesses such as the gender pay gap and were
at the forefront in arguing for the improved rights enabled by the
Disability Discrimination Act. Our Women at Work magazine is published
twice a year.
8 BTOG has expertise in health
and safety in the workplace. In the UK nine people are killed every
week and one in seventeen people suffer an occupational injury every year.
Most of these accidents can be prevented when employers work in partnership
with unions. Amicus has invested huge resources in this area and was the
first union to make nationally-recognised health & safety training
available to all its reps. Employers recognise that it makes good business
sense to seek our involvement.
9 Members have access to the
highly-regarded Amicus residential training facilities at Esher in Surrey. We have a professional team of
trainers and educators, who can develop the trade union and professional
skills of our members. Amicus trains some 5,000 reps every year in issues
such as health & safety, pensions and trade union organising. We also
run course from our regional offices and at workplaces when there is a
demand.
10 Amicus has strong links with
partner unions within the European Community and in eastern Europe. We are a
leading voice in the European TUC bodies, and have put our members'
views on any European legislation which may affect them, as well as
offering new ideas to the Commission. BTOG also contributes to the policy
initiatives of the Managerial and
Professional Staffs Association, of which it is a member. Our
overriding objective is to ensure that our members' interests are
protected.
